What mosaic tile adhesive do I need?
When using mosaic tile adhesive we always recommend researching information from the manufacturer you will be working with. It is important to note: always use white glue for glass mosaic tiles. The substrate should also be smooth and evenly coloured (white) when working with glass mosaics. If this is not the case, you will see irregularities and the colour after application will differ due to the different coloured background. This is of course not the case with porcelain mosaic tiles as they are not transparant.
In general, any mosaic tile adhesive suffices. What is more important is whether the adhesive adheres to the surface. Are you tiling on a surface from plaster, wood, concrete, etc.? Different adhesives may be recommended for different substrates, which may also differ from one manufacturer to another.
- Use sufficient, but not too much adhesive. Each tile must be in contact with the adhesive and pressed into the adhesive. The adhesive should not come out through the joints. If it does, remove it immediately otherwise you will not be able to grout the joints afterwards.
- Use a glue comb with fine teeth. The coarser the comb, the greater the risk of the glue penetrating the joints.
- When working with glass mosaic tiles, completely smooth out the white glue instead of using a notched trowel. This way the glue attaches evenly to every tile.
- Don’t cover more of the surface with tile adhesive than you can follow up with the mosaic tiles. If the glue dries/hardens before you can apply tiles, you will have to remove the glue and start over.
