What is the difference between ceramic and porcelain tiles?
The primary difference between ceramic and porcelain tiles lies in their composition and thus durability, and suitability for various applications.
A ceramic tile is made from a mix of clay and other materials. The tile is fired at lower temperatures, making them softer, more porous, and less durable than porcelain tiles. They are ideal for light to moderate foot traffic areas and come in a wide range of colours and designs.
Porcelain tiles, made from refined clay and fired at higher temperatures, are denser, harder, and more water-resistant. This makes them suitable for high-traffic areas, wet environments, and outdoor use.
Besides that, ceramic and porcelain is sometimes used interchangably as an umbrella term for pottery and other products made from clay. With the difference between ceramic and porcelain tiles being the different material properties this is not fully correct. But the mix-up is understandable.
