Tiling a corner with mosaic tiles
How is tiling a corner done by a professional tiler? How should you finish tiling mosaics when you reach a corner? With an inside or internal corner, the result is best when the tile design continues around the corner.
The biggest challenge, however, is tiling an outside or external corner. With these there are usually 2 options.
- Mitre the mosaic tiles at the appropriate angle (for example 45 degrees for a 90 degree corner) so that the corner is finished nicely without a break. This is possible with all TMF mosaics except our Natural Stone collection. It requires patience, skill, and the correct (and sharp) tools. Afterwards, fill the space between the two mosaic tiles with grout.
- Finish corners with a tile profile. A tile profile comes in different sizes (relative to the thickness of the tile), colours, materials and shapes (square or rounded, for example). Part of the tile profile is pushed into the adhesive under the mosaics. So there must be room to do this. You can then glue against the profile. This way is a lot easier than mitre cuts, but there are also situations where a profile is actually desirable. Think of corners in vulnerable locations such as in public areas or the corners of a bar.
Also important – for surfaces were you need to tile around a corner, we recommend starting to tile the mosaics from the corner. This will make the corner look its best as opposed to working from the middle of the surface towards the corner. For a wall or partition where there is no need to tile around a corner, we recommend working from the middle. This ensures the best possible result. In a kitchen, take into account the lower edge where the wall and countertop meet.
