Mosaic floor tiles
Not all types of mosaic floor tiles are suitable for use on a floor, as floors usually take more of a beating than walls or other surfaces. These following types of mosaic tiles are suitable for use on floors.
Ceramic mosaic tiles: Ceramic mosaic tiles are easy to clean, resistant to wear and tear and durable due to their production process as well as their recyclable raw materials. Note that there is a difference between porcelain ceramic with a glaze layer and without.
Porcelain with a glaze layer – These mosaic tiles have a glaze layer that will eventually wear off if you walk on it with shoes. As a result, the mosaic tiles will eventually lose their original glaze colour and shine. TMF therefore recommends using glazed porcelain only on floors you walk on with bare feet, such as the bathroom. This way, shoes can’t wear off the glazed layer.
Unglazed porcelain – These mosaic tiles have no glazed layer on top, so there is no applied colour or shine that can wear away. This makes unglazed porcelain very suitable for floors where people frequently walk on them with shoes. These mosaic tiles are also kiln-fired throughout meaning the whole tile has the same colour, even on the inside. This is perfect for mosaic floor tiles that endure wear and tear because they will not lose their original colour.
Glass mosaic tiles: Glass mosaic tiles are highly decorative and can give a unique look to a floor. They are resistant to water but are prone to scratching and breaking. As a result, glass mosaic floor tiles are only suitable for floors that people walk on with bare feet. They are often used in and around swimming pools and wellness areas.
Natural stone mosaic tiles: Natural stone mosaics, such as marble and pebbles, are durable and resistant to wear and tear. However, they can be porous and need regular treatment or impregnation to prevent staining.
It is important to ensure that the mosaic tiles you choose are suitable for use on a floor and meet the requirements for durability and wear resistance. At The Mosaic Factory we always apply the following rule: all mosaic tiles are suitable for walls, but not all are suitable for the floor. This has to do with the glaze layer on the porcelain mosaic tiles. On floors with high foot traffic mosaic tiles can wear down faster, which causes the glaze layer to eventually wear off.
