Grout types for mosaic tiles
Choosing the right grout types for your mosaic tile is very important. When choosing, it is advisable to consider the application of the mosaics. In what kind of room will the mosaic tiles be applied and what will the room be used for?
Usually, we recommend using tile grouts from Mapei. Mapei has a wide range of colours, making it easier to find a suitable match for your taste and our TMF mosaics. Other brands such as Sopro (part of Mapei), Eurocol, Schönox, etc. are all good too, but simply have fewer colours. We also use Mapei ourselves when we there is a board with mosaics that needs to be grouted, for example.
Within the Mapei range, we use 2 grout types at The Mosaic Factory:
- Cement-based tile grout
- Two-component or epoxy tile grout
What is a cement-bonded tile grout?
A cement-bonded grout is a standard mosaic tile grout that can be used in most cases. The grout is mould-resistant and easy to work with. The grout comes in powder form in bags that have to be diluted with water. On the Mapei website you can see exactly how this should be done (in the right proportion and mixed with a paint mixer) and how much you need depending on the width of the joint, the number of joints and the thickness of the tile.
What is a ‘two-component’ or epoxy grout?
An epoxy tile grout is a grout that seals completely and is smooth to the touch. Therefore, it is the ideal mosaic grout for wet areas (such as the shower) and for the kitchen back wall (where grease and food can splash against the mosaic tiles). An epoxy grout is also the type of grout that is always used in swimming pools.
Something to bear in mind: an epoxy tile grout is more expensive than a cement bonded grout. In terms of processing, it is just as easy (some say even easier by now) to work with.
For the exact ins and outs of which grout to use and how to process it, please refer to the website of the brand of grout you are going to use.
