How are glass mosaic tiles made?
How are glass tiles made? A glass mosaic tile, like ceramic mosaic tiles, is made using a hard plastic mould. The process is as follows.
- Glass production: First, the glass is made. Coloured glass in different shades is melted and formed into thin sheets of glass.
- Cutting the glass sheets: The glass sheets are then cut into smaller, equal sized pieces, which will form the glass mosaic tiles.
- Placement in the mould: The cut glass pieces are carefully placed in a mould, in which the desired shape and dimensions of the mosaic tile are cut out.
- Pressing and heating: The mould is placed in a press and put under pressure to ensure that the glass tile pieces fit together properly. The mould is then heated so that the glass fuses and sticks together.
- Cooling and removal from the mould: After the heating process, the mould is removed from the press and the glass mosaic tile is carefully removed from the mould.
- Finishing: The edges of the glass mosaic tile can be ground to achieve a neat finish.
This process ensures that the glass mosaic tiles are consistent in size and shape, making them easier to install and providing a uniform appearance when used to create mosaic designs.
In the case of the TMF Valencia collection, this differs. This collection is also made of glass but from a mix of recycled glass. The different types of glass in this mix have different properties. As a result, one recycled glass mosaic tile can expand a little more than another when processed in the mould. For this reason, the joint of the Valencia mosaics may vary and is not always the same everywhere.
