How do I calculate mosaic tile waste?
When working with mosaics, there is often mosaic tile waste or cutting loss. This is the part of the mosaic tile that is lost when cutting the tiles to size for the outer edges of the surface to be covered.
It is generally assumed that there is about 5% cutting loss when processing mosaic tiles. This means that with 100m² of mosaic tiles, for example, it would therefore take 105m² of mosaic tiles to cover the required area. This is because you will lose about 5% of the tiles when cutting them to size. Calculate the number of m² you need for the area and multiply that number again by 0.05. That is the number of m² you will lose in mosaic tile waste.
It is important to buy enough tiles to cover the area needed, plus extra tiles to compensate for any cutting loss. It is better to buy too many tiles than too few, because otherwise you will have to buy the same mosaic tiles for a 2nd time with the risk that the colour shade is just different from the mosaic you bought the 1st time (different production batch). You then also have to measure and cut again. With The Mosaic Factory, the cutting loss is often eliminated because the purchase of our mosaic tiles is per box, but always check this when ordering.
